Recently, LETELmetrics has been in New Mexico collecting thermal data from solar panels to find which ones are collecting the appropriate amounts of solar energy. This solar field mapping is also called photovoltaic (PV) inspections.

PV inspections are taking over where manual electric testing falls behind in sustainability and scale. Drone thermal imaging, or aerial thermography, is increasingly required in contracts for PV maintenance and data collection. Manual inspections can take hours or days, but a drone can inspect hundreds of acres in a single day.

How does it work?

Thermal cameras detect the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum, which allows them to “see” in total darkness or through fog and smoke. Aerial thermal imaging cameras make it easy to inspect a large target area and pinpoint solar panel problems, measuring temperature and detecting anomalies more accurately.

LETELmetrics combines thermal and RGB (red, green, blue) imaging data to more efficiently execute electrical testing on solar panels. Solar field mapping via drones, for instance, allows us to gather this data on which panels are collecting solar energy appropriately and provide this thermography to the client. We’re excited to be at the forefront of the types of engineering solutions that allow our clients to be more efficient and save money.

As many many more solar panels are sprouting up to provide renewable energy to the country, the need to inspect and maintain these critical assets will become vital to managing costs and efficiency. The rise in drone technology is proving to be a crucial tool for inspecting both small and large solar fields alike. As thermal sensor, software, and platform technology continues to evolve, so will the techniques used to collect and process thermal data, making it easier to censure compatibility with workflows and company procedures. As thermal drone solar inspections become more mainstream, asset owners and energy companies will want to start working with LETELmetrics, as we’ve been at the forefront of this technology for years.
